Crowns are used to reshape and rebuild badly damaged teeth, or cosmetically compromised teeth. The type of crown must be carefully selected for its situation.
The type of crown must be carefully selected for its situation.
For instance, we use porcelain bonded crowns as the strong, aesthetic work-day solution for areas of high wear and tear. Younger or whiter teeth can be superbly restored using metal-free pressed ceramics, bonded to the tooth.
Where discoloured and damaged teeth need to be significantly lightened, the newer, harder ceramics can be an excellent solution.
We are now able to offer the superb Prettau Zirconium, combining aesthetics and strength. While this crown is a little more expensive than the other full – ceramic options, it is fast becoming the material of choice for discerning patients.
The overriding factor in aesthetic crown creation is the preparation of the tooth. The gums must be healthy (no bleeding) and the crown margins must not encroach on the tooth below the gum level. As long as these principals are adhered to, top aesthetics can be maintained for decades.
This means that the health of your gums must be ensured if you are to have first–class solution, which might involve wearing temporary crowns until health is achieved.
Bridges have largely been superceeded by implant and single-crown solutions, which are much more resilient, but still offer a way of filling a gap at a more modest price.
The principles mentioned above still apply, and the ability to keep all surfaces of the bridge clean – even the hidden ones – is fundamental to their success.
